Equine Reiki — For the Horses Who Need It Most

Horses are majestic, sentient beings — deeply sensitive, deeply feeling.

Yet in a world where they are often bought, sold, and leased as if they are disposable, too many carry wounds that go far deeper than the physical.

When a horse returns from a lease in worse condition than they left — neglected, fearful, shut down — the trauma, emotional stress, and anxiety imprints deep into their being.

And that doesn't even begin to describe what they carry in their hearts.

I see you. I see them. And I'm here to help you both find your way back to trust.

The "Difficult" Horse — What Lies Beneath?

How often do we stop and ask: What is this horse trying to tell us?

A horse that shies at a halter or bridle may be remembering rough hands or an ill-fitting bit that caused pain.

A horse that flinches at touch may carry the memory of heavy-handed riding, yanked mouths, or heels kicked in too hard.

A horse labelled "difficult," "skittish," or "troublesome" may simply be a horse who has never felt safe.

I am not here to judge any training method or past experience.

What I can tell you, from years in the rescue and rehabilitation world, is that more often than not, young riders end up with powerful, terrified horses — and they have no idea how to manage their own energy, let alone begin to reset their horse's nervous system and build a trusting, heart-centred, soul-level partnership.

Energy is a horse's first language, and that is why Reiki energy treatment sessions begin to work with the horse's energy system, providing a reset from flight or fight, downgrading to rest and digest response.

We Begin with You — The Human Companion

This is where my work begins — with you, the human companion.

Together, we explore the current imbalances, understand what is really going on beneath the surface, and begin the gentle process of releasing stored stress, trauma, and anxiety.

Through Japanese Reiki, we create a pathway toward respectful partnership — where horse and human learn to meet each other with trust, patience, and an open heart.

Energy is a Horse's First Language

As natural prey animals, horses are wired for survival.

They are constantly on alert — reading the energy around them, scanning for danger, and responding to the subtlest shifts in their environment.

This is their gift, and it is also their burden.

For a horse who has suffered at human hands, that alertness becomes chronic hypervigilance — a nervous system stuck in fight or flight, unable to rest, unable to trust.

This is where Reiki speaks. Energy is a horse's first language — and Reiki is a gentle, nonverbal conversation that asks nothing and offers everything.

It bypasses fear, bypasses resistance, and meets the horse exactly where they are.

How Reiki Supports Your Horse — Body, Mind & Spirit Body:

Reiki supports horses on every level — physically, emotionally, and energetically.
Here is how it can help:

Calms the nervous system — Gently guiding the horse from chronic fight-or-flight into a calm rest-and-digest state, helping to release deep-held tension and trauma

Supports recovery from injury — Encouraging the body's natural healing processes, reducing recovery time and supporting tissue repair

Helps with digestive issues — By calming the nervous system and rebalancing the solar plexus chakra, Reiki can support healthy gut function and reduce stress-related digestive upset

Complements existing veterinary treatment — Reiki works gently alongside veterinary care, medications, farrier work, and equine dentistry, helping to soothe the horse during treatments and supporting overall well-being

Rebalances the energy centres (chakras) — Each chakra governs different organs and emotional states.

Reiki helps restore flow and harmony throughout the horse's energy system

Soothes horses who have experienced trauma, neglect, or human cruelty — Offering them a safe, non-judgmental space to begin releasing what they have held in their bodies, sometimes for years

How to Know Reiki is Working — Listening to the Horse

Horses speak through their bodies.

When Reiki is flowing and the horse begins to release, you will see beautiful, unmistakable signs:

Neck muscles soften and drop — The jaw unclenches, the poll releases

A smoother, gentler gait when walking — Movement becomes freer, less guarded

Yawning, licking, and chewing — Classic release responses as tension leaves the body

Scratching their back and rolling on the ground

Snorting, sneezing, or sighing — The body letting go

Passing wind or droppings — A deep physical release of held tension

Putting the head down to rest or sleep —

Perhaps the greatest sign of all: the horse finally feels safe enough to rest

These are the quiet, powerful moments that tell us Reiki is working.

The horse is softening. The body is releasing. Trust is beginning to return.

Considering the Full Needs of Your Horse — Maslow's Hierarchy for Equines

True well-being for a horse goes far beyond the physical.

I encourage every owner to consider the full spectrum of their horse's needs — what I call Maslow's Hierarchy for Horses:

  • Food & water
  • Shelter & safety
  • Health & veterinary care
  • Companionship & herd connection
  • Stimulation & enrichment
  • Freedom of movement & exercise
  • Emotional safety & trust

Japanese Reiki supports the horse on an emotional and spiritual level — giving them the opportunity to release stored emotions and, for some, to experience a loving, respectful relationship with a human for the very first time.

Energy, Chakras & the Horse's Body

Just as in humans, horses have an energy system with chakras — and imbalances in each chakra can affect the corresponding organs, tissues, and emotional states.

Through Reiki, I gently assess and support balance across the horse's energy centres, helping to release blockages and restore harmony throughout the body and mind.

I offer onsite visits to training yards, paddocks, equestrian centres, and private properties across Ballarat and surrounding areas.

I can also work alongside your farrier, equine dentist, or veterinarian — using Reiki to help calm and soothe your horse during treatments, making the experience gentler for everyone involved.

Extensive Training in Equine & Large Animal Reiki
I have completed extensive further Reiki training specifically for horses and larger animals, building on my years of hands-on experience in the rescue and rehabilitation industry.

This combined knowledge allows me to meet each horse where they are — whether newly rescued, in rehabilitation, or simply needing support to release stress and reconnect with trust.

Reiki is a Complementary Healing Practice

Please note that Reiki is a gentle complementary therapy and does not replace veterinary care.

Always seek veterinary advice for all health concerns.

Reiki works alongside veterinary treatment to support the horse emotionally and energetically, filling the gap that conventional care alone cannot always reach.
