<h2>Geisha &amp; The Gift of Ki: How a Rescued Dog Led Me to Reiki</h2> By Lainey Bowler | Elaine Bowler Reiki &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; There are moments in life that quietly redirect everything. A door opens — not with a bang, but with a soft nudge, a pair of oversized paws, and a pair of dark-rimmed eyes that look straight into your soul. For me, that moment arrived in 1999, and her name was Geisha. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A Puppy, a Promise, and a Second Chance She was tiny. Impossibly tiny — a small white bundle of fluff whose enormous paws and oversized ears hinted at the much larger dog she was destined to become. She was a mixed breed, that much was clear, though whatever she was crossed with remained one of life's lovely mysteries. What was no mystery was where she was headed before I found her: she was moments away from becoming part of a backyard breeding operation, her life reduced to a cycle of reproduction before it had even truly begun. &nbsp; I adopted her. &nbsp; She had dark, striking markings around her eyes — a natural kohl that reminded me of the elegance of Japanese Geishas — and so her name chose itself. Geisha. &nbsp; I didn't know it then, but in choosing her, I was also choosing a path. A path that would lead me through animal rescue, energy healing, and ultimately to the ancient art of Reiki. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Learning to Listen Without Words From the very beginning, Geisha and I communicated differently. There were no commands barked and obeyed — there was something quieter, something more intentional. After attending a check-up at 6 mounths, Geisha was diagnosed with a hearing impairment, and we undertook additional support with a specialist and gentle vibration collar. Through our daily training walks, mindfulness exercises, and what I can only describe as shared meditation, we began to develop a language that had nothing to do with sound. &nbsp; I would sit with her and send love from my heart to hers. Deliberately. Consciously. Breath by breath. &nbsp; It sounds simple. In practice, it asked everything of me — my patience, my presence, my willingness to slow down and feel rather than think. Over months of daily practice, we built something profound: an unspoken channel of communication rooted in energy and intention. Animal communication, at its most elemental. &nbsp; This is what many practitioners now recognise as the foundational principle of energy healing — the understanding that living beings are not just physical bodies, but energetic ones too, constantly transmitting and receiving. Geisha seemed to have always known this. She was simply waiting for me to catch up. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The Nanny Dog: A Healer Before I Had a Name for It As my rescue work grew, so did Geisha's role in it. She became what I can only describe as a bomb-proof dog — steady, gentle, unshakeable. Animal after animal came through my care, traumatised, shut down, or shut off from humanity, and Geisha would simply be with them. No agenda. No pressure. Just calm, consistent, loving presence. &nbsp; She was a nanny dog in the truest sense — soothing frightened cats, grounding skittish dogs, offering comfort to creatures who had every reason not to trust a human again. She modelled trust so that others could find it. &nbsp; When I became pregnant with my first child, Geisha adapted without hesitation. She watched my growing belly with quiet curiosity and then, when my daughter arrived, stepped seamlessly into her new role as gentle guardian. Devoted protector, she remained within 2 feet of my daughter at all times, carefully watching over her, every breath, and every miniscule noise. Remarkably, despite her own profound hearing loss, Geisha would stir and alert at the sound of my daughter's cry — long before I'd heard it myself. I believe she felt the emotional frequency of distress before the sound even reached her. The Japanese have a word for this kind of bond: Kokoro — the unity of heart, mind, and soul. is what Geisha and I shared.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Three Times She Fought. Three Times She Stayed. Geisha was diagnosed with cancer — not once, not twice, but three times across the course of her life. Each diagnosis brought with it the crushing weight that every pet owner knows: the fear, the treatment decisions, the quiet negotiations with time. &nbsp; We pursued veterinary treatment each time, and each time she fought her way back. But it was during one of her recovery periods that our holistic veterinarian made a suggestion that would change my life forever. &nbsp; "There is an animal blessing day at a Tibetan monastery," she said. "You might consider taking Geisha." &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The Monastery and the Moment Everything Shifted I arrived at the Tibetan monastery not entirely sure what to expect. What I found was stillness — a quality of silence and presence I had never encountered before in such concentrated form. The monks moved with intention. The air itself felt different. &nbsp; That day, as part of the animal blessing ceremony, I was introduced for the first time to the formal concepts of energy healing: ki, the life force energy that flows through all living things; mindfulness, the deliberate anchoring of awareness in the present moment; and breath as a vehicle for healing. &nbsp; Everything I had been practising intuitively with Geisha — the heart-to-heart connection, the energetic attunement, the silent communication — suddenly had a framework, a lineage, a name. &nbsp; Reiki. &nbsp; I understood in that moment that I had not stumbled onto something new. I had been remembering something ancient. The monastery visit didn't plant a seed — it revealed the tree that had already been growing. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A Gentle Passing, and the Final Gift Geisha walked alongside me for almost 14 years. Through rescue work, through motherhood, through her own battles with illness, she remained my steadiest companion — gentle, wise, and wholly present. &nbsp; When the time came to say goodbye, we chose a vet-assisted passing at home. It was peaceful. It was dignified. And Reiki was there — flowing through my hands, holding the space, offering her the same loving energy she had spent her whole life offering others. &nbsp; I like to think she felt it. I know she did. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Why Rescue Animals and Reiki Belong Together Geisha taught me something that I carry into every session I now facilitate: healing begins with presence. Rescued animals, in particular, often carry the energetic imprint of fear, abandonment, and loss in their bodies long after the physical wounds have healed. They need more than food and shelter. They need to feel safe at a cellular, energetic level. &nbsp; Reiki offers exactly that. It is non-invasive, gentle, and requires only willingness — from the practitioner, and from the animal receiving it. It does not force. It does not impose. It simply offers, and allows the recipient to take what they need. &nbsp; This is what drew me to Reiki, and this is why I have dedicated my practice — as a Reiki Master Teacher, certified practitioner, and holder of a Certificate III in Animal Studies with specialised training in Equine and Animal Reiki — to supporting rescued and rehabilitating animals and their human companions. &nbsp; Because sometimes a tiny white puppy with enormous paws and dark-rimmed eyes can change the entire direction of your life. And in many ways, it is also mine.<h3>A Shy Soul From a Hard Road</h3> In 2013, I fostered — and later adopted — a Aussie shepherd cross Australian Kelpie who had been surrendered from a farm and found herself at a high-kill rural pound. She was pulled to safety by the rescue organisation where I volunteered, and the moment she arrived in my care, I knew she was extraordinary.I named her Tipstar. Tippy, for short.She was deeply shy and timid, carrying the weight of a rough start with every cautious step. She flinched at sudden movements, shied from outstretched hands, and viewed the world through eyes that had seen too much uncertainty too soon. As a foster carer who specialised in rehabilitating traumatised animals, I had worked with many frightened souls — but Tippy reached something in me that no animal had before.Rebuilding her trust was not a process I could rush. It required patience, consistency, and a willingness to simply be with her — without expectation, without agenda. Tippy had her own way of asking. During our meditations together, she would lean gently into me — pressing her body, her ribcage, directly against my hands. She was telling me, with quiet certainty, exactly where she needed the healing to flow. There was no hesitation in her. No doubt.I have sat with many animals in Reiki sessions over the years. But Tippy taught me something I will carry always: that animals possess a deep, innate wisdom about their own bodies and their own healing — and that Reiki creates the conditions for that wisdom to be expressed and honoured.<h3>The Gift of a Graceful Farewell</h3>The day came — as it always does, if we are fortunate enough to love deeply — when Tippy told me she was ready.Not in words, of course. But those of us who have loved an animal fully will understand exactly what I mean. There is a communication that transcends language. A knowing that passes between souls when the time has come.At the veterinary clinic, as we said our final farewell, I held a Reiki vigil at her side. I sat in the stillness of that sacred space, hands gentle and steady, channelling healing and love and peace — not to hold her here, but to ease her way forward. To let her know, one last time, that she was safe, that she was loved, and that she had given me more than I could ever express.I believe, with everything in me, that Reiki helped ease her passing. That the peace in the room that day was palpable. That she left surrounded by love and light, held in the energy we had shared together for so many years.<h3>Beyond the Veil — Kokoro, and the Heart-Soul Bond That Continues </h3>Grief, when you lose an animal companion, is a love that has nowhere left to go in the physical world. It is real, it is valid, and it deserves to be honoured.I miss Tippy greatly. Every single day.And yet — she has not truly left. In my Reiki practice, when I sit in stillness and open myself as a channel for healing, I feel her presence. Tipstar now assists me from the Spirit, her energy woven into the healing work I offer to animals and their humans. She is part of every session.In Japanese, the word kokoro (心) speaks to something that cannot be fully translated — it encompasses heart, mind, and soul as one unified essence. The bond Tippy and I share is kokoro — a heart-soul connection that does not end at the physical threshold. Each animal that I encountered became a teacher to me, helping me to understand that all sentient beings are natural born healers, with a purpose in becoming a companion to their special person. In my &nbsp;experience all of my animal companions understood and accepted me unconditionally far more often than people ever did.Since my late teens, I have been involved in animal rescue &amp; rehabilitation, volunteering my spare time to advocate for those voiceless sentient beings, who for no fault of their own, were failed by their humans and sadly ended up in the animal rescue community. In the early 2000’s I attended an animal rescue healing workshop, where I learned about therapeutic touch and about meditating with energy healing for animals &amp; experienced Reiki for the first time, and also saw first hand, how Reiki meditation helped to provide a calming nurturing effect on most rescued dogs, cats and horses. This ignited my passion to learn more about energy healing and Animal Reiki. Since 2020, I have been actively sharing my personal Usui Reiki practice with Animals.Fast forward to June, 2024, &nbsp;this year when I decided to attend an Equine Reiki training day, with Laura Barbour, Reiki Master Teacher &amp; the wild Spanish mustangs of the <a data-mce-href="https://www.equinereikiscotland.co.uk/" href="https://www.equinereikiscotland.co.uk/">Medicine Pony Tribe</a>, which is an Accredited Animal Reiki Training Centre by the UK Reiki Federation.Let Animals Lead® is quite different from other Animal Reiki methods. It is a unique approach to sharing reiki with animals which is a meditation based foundation. Animal led reiki sessions are quite different to a standard hands-on reiki session as with people. All sentient beings are inherently natural born healers, and when we embrace ‘Being Reiki’ we choose to hold sacred space without judgement. Our hands are in the gassho position, or facing outwards, and touch is only used when the animal presents itself against our palms, indicating acceptance of hands on reiki.As Animal Reiki practitioners, we are not only embodying the Reiki precepts, we also acknowledge the <a data-mce-href="https://www.animalreikisource.com/post/the-6-pillars-of-the-let-animals-lead-method-of-animal-reiki" href="https://www.animalreikisource.com/post/the-6-pillars-of-the-let-animals-lead-method-of-animal-reiki" target="_blank" rel="noopener">6 Pillars of Animal Reiki</a> through the release of our ego’s and choose to detach from the healing outcome, viewing all animals as perfectly imperfect in that moment. We are ‘Being Reiki’ by seeking consent and offering to share unconditional Love in a safe healing space, choosing “to let go of “doing” Reiki and instead learning the healing power of compassionate presence within an Animal Reiki Meditation.” -Kathleen Prassad.&nbsp;Meditation with the Medicine pony tribe was a wonderful experience, in which I was able to return to the basics of Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki and put the 'Handbook of Equine Reiki' recommendations &amp; Usui Reiki Japanese meditations into practice, while surrendering fully to the healing wisdom of the wild Spanish mustangs. Wild Mustangs are incredibly sensitive to energy, scents and emotions, so to prepare myself, I took the opportunity to ground centre &amp; shield by using Kenyoko Ho, also known as dry bathing. &nbsp;Kenyoko Ho or Dry Bathing is a quick routine that you can practice at the beginning of your Usui Reiki meditation or hands-on-healing practice. It is practiced to cleanse the body, mind and spirit. We practice Kenyoku Ho with the intention to clear anything that is preventing us from being an open and receptive channel for Reiki. It can also be used to ground and disconnect from people, and situations that are taking you out of the present moment.Then I sat in meditation &amp; set my intentions - to be a clear conduit for reiki to flow for the highest good of all beings. Joshin Kokyu Ho is a foundational meditation practice in the tradition of Reiki. This practice builds the Hara, improves concentration and clears the energy field. Practise this meditation for approximately 15 minutes. This meditation can improve the flow of breath, and Reiki in the body and mind. It can lessen the effects of stress, and help you ground your energy field.Once I was sufficiently prepared energetically, I was permitted to enter the corral area where the ponies were busy eating and relaxing, while enjoying their feed. The ponies are used to a specific routine and after raising my vibration and seeking their consent, I was very hopeful to be accepted by the tribe &amp; be allowed to interact respectfully.Standing quietly and as unobtrusive as possible, I continued in the Gassho position, while practising Reiki breathwork and paying attention to their body language. Expanding my aura and widening the healing space, suddenly several ponies approached me &amp; granted permission by nuzzling my hands, and venturing closer to sniff.One of the ponies, Mystery Illusion, had decided she wanted a personal hands-on Reiki session, which according to Laura, was quite unusual for this particular lady. She placed her head into my palms for a gentle scratch and then continued moving back and forth under my hands, as she indicated she wanted a whole-body reiki energy sweep from nose to tail. She then pressed her head against my forehead and held that position for several moments, while breathing deeply and sharing her energy, she then nuzzled my neck and continued to take deep breaths, while sighing deeply. At this moment, intuitively I received an energetic download of many images in quick succession, psychically. I began explaining to Laura what I had felt, sensed, and seen, a mountain of information, I tried to accept and decipher without placing my interpretation. Laura was able to verify and confirm 8/10 of the pieces of information that the lovely and most chatty Mystery Illusion had shared with me. Over the next few hours, several other of the mustangs also approached me, eager to have my undivided attention, and take part in sharing Reiki space with me. It was such a wonderful experience. It truly was such a blessing &amp; spiritual experience I can't put into words. To let the ponies teach me, &amp; surrendering to the Wisdom and healing with the Spanish Mustang Herd was an experience to behold &amp; cherish.Thank you Laura so much, I can't wait to return again one day for Celtic Horse whispering &amp; Meditation. Did you know that <a data-mce-href="https://www.reikiaustralia.com.au/reiki-australia-in-hospitals/" href="https://www.reikiaustralia.com.au/reiki-australia-in-hospitals/" title="Reiki Australia in hospitals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reiki Australia</a> is proud to announce that one of our very own Reiki Australia ARTP members and newest board member Lainey Bowler was providing Reiki treatments in a medical setting?From September - December 2023, the Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Care (BRICC Wellness Centre) at Grampians Health Ballarat,&nbsp; recommenced offering Reiki Treatments to its patients on Thursday afternoons each week."The gentle nurturing Reiki energy Clients receive from a single Reiki treatment session has a tremendous positive effect on their physical, mental, emotional and Spiritual well-being.”Recent research studies into the effectiveness of Reiki treatments as part of medical care plans, is showing that Reiki treatments can have an important part in improving patient outcomes, particularly for oncology patients; improving quality of life for those with life-limiting illness, reduction of pain, reduction of side effects of chemotherapy &amp; or radiation, reduction of stress and anxiety, and supporting Spiritual and Pastoral Care.A few months ago, I ran into a friend at the supermarket who mentioned that there was a vacancy at the local hospital Oncology Wellness Centre for a volunteer Reiki Practitioner, so I applied. I was invited for an interview, demonstrated a short Reiki session for the manager while we chatted, and I was hired on the spot! Thank you Reiki.My first shift included an induction of the wellness clinic, the various rooms for various events, meeting some of the other volunteers and staff, and explanations of all the other services, therapies, and support programs running at the centre. I also was introduced to some of the patients and clients in the Cuppa &amp; Chat social room. The majority of clients that I have met have chosen to seek additional holistic support such as Reiki treatments to help reduce the stress and anxiety, and other symptoms associated with coping with their medical treatment plans. Each BRICC Wellness centre client has also commented to me that after receiving their Reiki treatment, they feel much calmer and relaxed, and look forward to their next Reiki appointment. One client experienced Reiki for the first time and was pleasantly surprised how calm he felt and said “the Reiki treatment felt like a warm &amp; fuzzy massage for his soul”. Another client told me that she found the session incredibly nurturing and soothing, felt calmer, and her headache and upset tummy had subsided considerably. Several first-time clients took the opportunity to experience a Reiki treatment, and all said they enjoyed the calming peaceful energy, and were pleasantly surprised. Many 'newbies' came back for further treatments because they enjoyed it so much, and others took a brochure to share with friends..Each Reiki treatment session approximately 30 - 45 minutes of Reiki treatment per client, to allow for cleaning between clients, infection control procedures and practising spiritual hygiene. Sessions are at hourly intervals allowing time for clients to fill out an Intake &amp; consent form, and time for discussion.&nbsp;The BRICC welIness centre is funded by community donations and is run almost entirely by volunteers who freely offer their valuable time and skills. I am grateful for the opportunity to have connected with so many lovely people through my volunteer experience. I hope our path cross again some day, but until then thank you for allowing me the privilege to hold sacred reiki space for your healing session. Reiki 'In Touch' with Hospitals

<h2> </h2><blockquote>In October I travelled to Melbourne to attend a Reiki retreat where myself, and other Reiki students were able to complete our training &amp; initiated into the 3d degree of Usui Reiki -Shinpiden. </blockquote>Day One - I woke to a beautiful morning in Melbourne, and watched air-ballons rising across the horizon as the sun rose. I shared coffee on the balcony with an inquisitive Raven with a slightly damaged feathers on her tail. She strutted over confidently and made herself comfortable watching my every move, perched on the rail. As I completed my morning ritual, and began my own self-Reiki treatment, I sudenly felt an energetic presence nearby, within my energy field. When I opened my eyes, I was surprised to see the raven preening her feathers sitting only inches away. Clearly confident that I was no threat to her, she had hopped over even closer to me, gazing at me intently and was now sitting on the arm of the outdoor chair. Clearly trying to soak up the reiki energy flowing through me. (All animals love Reiki, as energy is their first language. My own pets love to demand their personal session!)She stayed there for at least 5 minutes, and began preening herself, as i watched with half-closed eyes, savouring this beautiful connection with a wild bird. Intuitively I felt she had once been someones pet, or had been hand reared at some time. As if to give me confirmation my thoughts, she stepped forward slowly, bowed her head into my hand and gently give me a shiny key-ring missing its charm. She bowed again and placed her head into my hands, bobbing her head and neck up and down for a scratch for a brief moment. The raven flew top the railing extended both her wings fully stretching, cawed 3 times and flew away. What a Blessing to receive from the universe and a truly magickal moment!Brunch, Coffee, Food and training....I was finally able to re-connect in person with my Reiki Master-Teacher, Sue who had moved interstate, but had travelled back to Victoria for this event. Yay!&nbsp; I was also looking forward to finally meeting the other Reiki students in the class, Sue W, Erin, Dee, Emma, &amp; Nuccia. After introductions, and COFFEE! Sue finally had our undivided attention and training began as the was much information to recap and learn. After a huge day, we were all energized and buzzing from the combined positive energy.That evening we all went to dinner together, chatted, laughed and bonded over sharing our stories. The food was delicious, &amp; thanks to Nuccia's knowledge of the area, we certainly were not disappointed in the culinary delights or menus.Day 2 - Training continued, and then on completion, Sue then presented each of us with our new Reiki Master Certificates. With much clapping, laughter and tears, we somehow managed to take the obligatory photos. We had decided to end the day and chose to have lunch together to celebrate our newest achievement.&nbsp; My heart was bursting with gratitude for the truly empowering experience that we shared, and the new friendships that I made. Reiki has a truly wonderful way of bringing exactly the right people into my life, at exactly the right time. That is the synchronicity of the universe..It was a lovely weekend filled with so many beautiful &amp; magickal moments. True mastery does not exist, for it is a life-long learning journey of living the Gokai, and to embody the Reiki precepts in all aspects of life.&nbsp; Just for today.... Be Reiki.As some wise old green dude once said to his students:‘Do or Do Not, there is No try’.&nbsp;
